Monday was the first day of the Battle of the Bulge at the Fair Acres Family YMCA.
For the second year, Tericia Mixon with the YMCA, is coordinating a unique and fun way for locals to lose weight, focus on health and enjoy friendly competition.
“Battle of the Bulge is a weight-loss program like no other,” Mixon said. “Teams compete for the prize of three months free membership to the Fair Acres Family YMCA. The winning team will have completed the three-month competition with the greatest overall body fat loss.”
Participants receive coaching assistance with weight loss and management, healthy eating tips, exercise tips, motivational strategies, de-stressing ideas, team support, monthly incentive prizes and the satisfaction of winning the battle over the bulge. Every week, the participants weigh in to track their progress and meet with coaches and team members.
For Jenny Hopp, 67, of Carthage, the competition last year was a thrilling experience.
“I like the encouragement you get from the program and the Y gives all the time,” Hopp said. “The teams help motivate each other, and there are many tools you can use in the program. I saw people using programs on their phones, going to websites, but the most simple tool was the notebook you get in the Battle of Bulge to journal your progress. That was the most successful tool to me because you document where you're at in the program, what you're eating and how you're feeling. It helps you not only lose weight but take a look at your life. Yes, I would recommend the Battle of the Bulge, and the many other classes at the Y. I think we are very fortunate to have such a place here in Carthage.”
The participants will meet the first Monday evening of the month at the YMCA until April. Registrations are still being accepted for this competition; to inquire call 358-1070 as soon as you can.
