  • Two people were killed and four were injured in a crash on Interstate 44 involving a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes, hitting another vehicle.
The two drivers, Bonnie Weaver, 75, Tulsa, and Johnny Washburn, 58, Asbury were killed. Injured were Deborah Washburn, 49; Abby Washburn, 19; Samantha Washburn, 13 and Karli Washburn, 12. All four were passengers in Johnny Washburn's vehicle. They were taken to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin with serious injuries.
The patrol said Weaver's Dodge pickup was traveling west in the eastbound lane when it hit the Washburn SUV head on.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Watson said the accident happened at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday and forced eastbound I-44 traffic to be diverted through Sarcoxie for about two hours.
The accident happened about a mile east of the Reeds/Sarcoxie exit at mile marker 26.
Watson said the Jasper County 9-1-1 office received a call from a driver on I-44 at 12:18 p.m. of a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-44 near mile marker 32.
The Jasper County dispatcher transferred the call to the patrol and troopers were dispatched, but they couldn't intercept before the accident happened.
The patrol was still investigating the crash late Saturday.
