  • Filing deadline approaches for city, school seats

  • There was only one change so far this week in the list of people running for area boards of education and city leadership posts.
    Another person has filed for the Sarcoxie Board of Education with the deadline only four business days away.
    No one has filed for one seat on the Carthage City Council, one seat on the Jasper Board of Aldermen, and one seat on the Avilla Board of Education.
    In Carthage
    A challenger and the incumbent have filed for one of five open seats on the Carthage City Council for the April 2, 2013 general election, while the incumbents are the only people who have filed for two open seats on the Carthage R-9 Board of Education.
    Filing continues until Jan. 15 for the annual municipal and school elections slated for April 2.
    In Carthage, five seats are up for reelection on the City Council, one in each ward.
    City Clerk Lynn Campbell said, as of Thursday, there will be at least one contested race for a city council seat.
    Campbell said Mike Hutton, 709 Florence St., filed to challenge incumbent Steve Leibbrand for the Ward 3 seat on the council.
    Four incumbents filed in December, Jim Swatsenbarg in Ward 1; Leibbrand in Ward 3; Dan Rife in Ward 4 and Ed Hardesty in Ward 5.
    The Ward 2 seat currently held by Larry Chapin is also up for reelection, but no one has filed for that seat as of Monday.
    On the Carthage Board of Education, incumbents Dr. Mark Westhoff and Justin Baucom have filed for the two open seats. No one else had filed as of Wednesday.
    People interested in filing for the Carthage City Council should come to city hall on the east side of the Carthage Square, fill out the forms and present either a $25 filing fee or a nominating petition with the signatures of 25 registered voters from their ward.
    People interested in filing for Board of Education should come to the R-9 Administration office at 710 Lyon St. to file the paperwork to run.
    Jasper Board of Aldermen
    Jasper’s Mayor and two seats on the four-member Board of Aldermen are up for reelection this year.
    Incumbent Mayor Paul Nelson has filed for reelection and will face a challenger, Bill Hulstine, who filed for the seat on Monday.
    On the Board, Mike Smith, the incumbent East Ward Alderman, has filed for reelection to that seat. No one has filed as of Wednesday to challenge him.
    No one has filed for the West Ward seat currently held my Mark Weng.
    People interested in running for Jasper Board of Aldermen should file at Jasper City Hall.

    Page 2 of 2 - Four people have filed for the two open seats on the Jasper R-5 Board of Education.
    As of Wednesday, challengers Alicia Rives and Matthew Dumm have filed as well as incumbents Carolyn Corle and Joe Heger. The top two vote getters will take the three-year terms on the board.
    People interested in running for Jasper Board of Education should file at the Jasper School Superintendent’s office.
    Sarcoxie Board of Aldermen
    Two seats, one in the East Ward and one in the West Ward, are up for reelection on the Sarcoxie Board of Aldermen.
    As of Wednesday, in Ward 1, incumbent Johnny Mendera will face a challenge from Rick Mize.
    Incumbent Cole Cummins is the only person who has filed for the Ward 2 seat.
    People interested in filing for the Sarcoxie Board of Aldermen should file at Sarcoxie City Hall.
    Sarcoxie Board of Education
    Two three-year seats, currently held by Jeremy Caddick and John Lewis, are up for reelection on the Sarcoxie Board of Education.
    As of Wednesday, Lewis has filed for reelection along with J.T. Roberson and Gary Turner, who filed this week.
    People interested in running for Sarcoxie Board of Education should file at the Sarcoxie School Superintendent’s office at Sarcoxie High School
    Avilla Board of Education
    Two seats, currently held by Linda Fix and Travis Gubser, are up for reelection on the Avilla R-13 Board of Education.
    Gubser is the only person who has filed for reelection as of Wednesday.
    People interested in running for Avilla Board of Education should file at the Avilla School Superintendent’s office.
