  • Carthage resident killed in traffic crash

  • A Carthage man was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in rural Jasper County east of town late Thursday night, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

  • A Carthage man was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in rural Jasper County east of town late Thursday night, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
    The Patrol said Andrew L. Johnson, 32, Carthage, was killed in the crash that occurred at 11:35 p.m. Friday, at the “T” junction where County Route E meets Morrow Mill Road (County Road 118).
    The Patrol said Johnson’s Hyundai Tiburon was traveling south on County Road 118 and failed to stop at the “T” junction, traveling off the south side of the road and hitting a tree.
    Jasper County Deputy Coroner John Hicks declared Johnson dead at the scene of the crash, which was the first fatality crash of 2013 in Southwest Missouri, according to the Patrol’s accident report.
    Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff’s office assisted four troopers with the investigation into the crash.
    School bus crash
    A Carl Junction student suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle crash involving a Carl Junction school bus early on Friday.
    The patrol said Alisha Cobb, 15, Carl Junction, was taken to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin with minor injuries after her school bus was hit from behind by a vehicle at 7:30 a.m. Friday on County Road 284, four miles north of Carl Junction.
    The patrol said the bus, driven by Elmer L. McWilliams, 49, Asbury, was pointed south and stopped to pick up students when it was hit from behind by a car driven by Jill M. Wilkins, 56, Oronogo.
    Icy crash
    Two Carthage teens were injured in a single-vehicle accident that happened at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday on Harmony Road four miles east of Carthage.
    The patrol said Jason P. Liberty, 16, and DeSean A. Joseph, 17, both of Carthage, were taken to Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital in Carthage with minor injuries after the accident.
    The patrol said an SUV, driven by Liberty, slid off an ice-covered road and hit a tree.
    “T” junction crash
    A Jasper man suffered minor injuries when he failed to stop at a “T” junction north of Carthage early in the morning on New Year’s Day, the patrol said.
    The patrol said Stephen Tong, 34, Jasper, was taken to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin after the accident at the intersection of Civil War Road and Base Line Road north of Carthage.
    The accident happened at 2:43 a.m. Wednesday. The patrol said Tong was traveling north and failed to stop at the “T” junction. His pickup hit the ditch, then rolled into the open field north of the road.
