  • She gladly gave her locks – 16 inches of hair was gone in a moment, but a smile stayed for the rest of the day.
Zoe Hendricks turned nine on Wednesday, Dec. 26. The following day she, her mother, Ozrelle Hendricks, and grandmother, Zoe Hedge, were at MadStyle Salon.
“I've done lots of cuts for Locks of Love but never this much,” said salon owner Shanna Potter.
After one big snip, 16 inches of light brown hair was carefully removed from Zoe's head. Ozrelle, who has long hair, stood by a little teary-eyed with a camera.
“She said she wanted to give it to someone who didn't have any hair, and she said 'that'd be a good Christmas gift, huh,'” Ozrelle said. “It's a good cause … She looks so different.”
As Potter trimmed and styled Zoe's new look, her little third grade client couldn't hold a straight face. After all, this was her first hair cut in her life.
“She was up at seven this morning,” Ozrelle said of her daughter's excitement. “She's been asking for a couple years now, but this year my mom is encouraging this – which is really funny because she never let me cut my hair.”
The only concern for the trim was making sure there was still enough to be pulled back for dance. Zoe has been a dancer at the Dancer's Studio since she was two, and also enjoys volleyball, basketball, drawing and participating in pageants. Ozrelle said they now face a fun challenge of learning how to style short hair.
“Feels loose,” Zoe said with a big smile, flipping her new look.
This young lady's first hair cut was also special to the family since she is the only daughter. There is also Zachary, 18; Shane, 14; Zaden, 10; and Zeb, 5.
On the other side of the scissors, Potter said she was proud to be a part of the family's big day.
“It's very rewarding,” she said. “I wouldn't do anything else. This is something you can do to give back to the community. Not only is it a great gift to someone who doesn't have hair, it's transforming her style and attitude. It's really cool to be a part of that.”
