  • Claude R. McDonald, 88, Carthage, Mo., passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 at Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital following a brief illness.
Claude was born Jan. 20, 1924 at Reeds, Mo. to the late Henry and Florence (Taylor) McDonald.  He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 17, 1943 at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign.  He was honorably discharged on March 7, 1944 at Camp Carson, Colo.

Claude worked for Leggett and Platt for 25 years.  He later owned and operated his own automotive repair business.  He greatly enjoyed working on cars, especially when he was tinkering with one from the muscle car era. He restored many classic cars entering them in local car shows and parades, winning hundreds of trophies. In his earlier years he co-founded the Challengers Car Club and built race engines for many cars raced at the Mokan Drag Strip.  Claude liked being outdoors and enjoyed taking long hikes.
He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent many hours watching their performances and concerts and taking the younger ones on rides on his tractor.
Besides his parents, Claude was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Lee and Katherine Payton; and by one brother, Leo McDonald.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor of their home; one daughter, Rae Dene (Craig) Bryson, Carthage, Mo.; one sister, Vivian Park, Reeds, Mo.; two granddaughters, Crystal (Chris) Whitesell, and Chelle (Andy) Eby; six great-grandchildren, Noah Eby, Hannah Eby, Jonah Eby, Olivia Whitesell, Sophi Whitesell, and Eli Whitesell; a myriad of nieces and nephews, and many friends who will miss him very much.
