  • A way to honor some of Carthage's most influential citizens from the past and present will begin on Friday.
The first Hall of Carthage Heroes inducting ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at the Fair Acres Family YMCA. Bill Putnam, whose family roots trace back to the founding days of Carthage, said 24 people will be the first implementation to the honoring wall.
“Six are athletes, three of those are living and two will be with us on Friday at the ceremony,” Putnam said. “Eighteen are civic leaders. It's really a way of recognizing people of Carthage whose lives or accomplishments are worthy to serve as role models for today's youth.”
What started as an idea, with the late local historian and author Marvin VanGilder's views implemented into the initiative, has now become a reality. Documentation will be complete with a book compiled by Abi Almandinger at the Carthage Public Library, and a website (which will be announced Friday) with full information on the Hall of Heros, its inductees and future nomination forms.
“It's been an interesting project,” Putnam said. “People will hear familiar names, and some not, and learn about Carthage's history through its citizens and their accomplishments.”
