  • The Carthage High School girls swim team was a perfect 4-0 Tuesday in the Carthage Quad at the Fair Acres Family Y as the Tigers benefited from another record-breaking performance from sophomore Mercy Housh.
Housh, who set a new school record in the 200 freestyle last weekend, set a new school mark in the 500 freestyle in Tuesday, breaking the previous record of 5:35.8 set by Madison McKnight in 2006.
“Mercy swims year round and began the sport at a young age,” Carthage head coach Braden McBride said. “Both of these factors, along with her strong work ethic, are contributing to her early success.
“I was very pleased with the girls’ intensity,” McBride said. “Coming off two meets this weekend I was concerned they may come out a little flat. It was a total team effort.”
Carthage beat The Summit Prep Academy 130-6, beat Seymour 123-28, beat Parkview 121-42 and the Tigers topped Lamar 102-56.
Carthage finished second in the 200-yard medley relay, as Lacey Stephens, Shelby Hatcher, Lydia Youngworth and Abbie Kennedy combined to finish in 2:18.72.
Katie Watson won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:15.05, while Hatcher finished third, Kennedy finished fifth and Tasha Charles placed eighth.
Youngworth won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:46.60. Taylor Herbst placed fourth in the event.
M’Lynne Wagner earned second in the 50-yard freestyle after finishing the race in 28.24. Stephens placed fourth in the event and Alyssa Rockers finished eighth.
Watson’s time of 1:24.64 earned her first place in the 100-yard butterfly, and Herbst placed third.
Stephens and Taylor Hart finished first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:02.32 and 1:02.43. Charles finished seventh.
Housh won the 500-yard freestyle with a record-setting time of 5:35.00, Youngworth followed in second place and Cailin Dawley earned fifth.
Housh, Hart, Watson and Wagner teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.24. Alyssa Rockers, Kennedy, Dawley and Herbst teamed up to place fifth in the relay.
Wagner and Hart placed second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 1:18.54 and 1:19.51. Rockers placed sixth.
In the 100-yard breaststroke it was Housh with the win after she posted a time of 1:17.18. Hatcher took third and Dawley took ninth.
Housh, Youngworth, Watson and Hatcher teamed up to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:22.85, and Wagner, Stephens, Hart and Kennedy finished in second place.
