Billie Jean VanWey, 86, Carthage, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 in Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Mo.
Billie Jean Bumgarner was born April 26, 1926 in Harris, Mo., the daughter of William Samuel Bumgarner and Hazel Louise (Dorr) Bumgarner. She attended public schools in Harris, Mo. and was a 1944 graduate of Harris High School. She worked for several years as a clerk for Scott’s Variety Store and Ben Franklin Variety Store, both in Carthage.
She married Charles VanWey on April 21, 1971 in Carthage; he survives. She and her husband owned and operated Van’s Doughnut Shop in Carthage, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, Carthage and served on the Board of Directors for the Can-Do Senior Center, Carthage.
Additional survivors include three daughters; Linda (Ferrell) Hodge, Poplar Bluff, Mo., Jackie (Tom) Asbell, Carterville, Mo. and Bobbie Pitman, Carthage, Mo.; one brother, Kenneth Charles Bumgarner, Palm Springs, Calif.; two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
