November Health Focus: Diabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to blindness, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and loss of limb. Mercy McCune-Brooks Hospital is offering a FREE glucose screen on two dates in November. The free glucose screen (finger stick glucose screen) is available from 8-10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6 and Tuesday, Nov. 27. A Dietician will be available to consult with participants who have abnormal glucose test results. The screen is available in our outpatient laboratory inside the main entrance. Water only for 8-12 hours prior to testing.
Free Friends & Family Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Class – Nov. 8, 6 - 9 p.m. in the hospital conference room. This class is geared toward babysitters, parents, caregivers or those who have family members with medical problems so that they will be aware of what actions to take in case of an emergency. This class includes infant CPR, but does not provide certification.

Nov. 6, 13, 27 - Grief Support Group will meet from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Felix E. Wright Family Chapel. Discussion will be led by Galen Snodgrass, hospital chaplain. For more

Nov. 10 - Spradling Family Birthing Center Prenatal Class, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the hospital training room. Topics include nutrition in pregnancy, stages of labor, breathing and relaxation exercises and post partum care. Participants need to bring a sack lunch or cash to purchase lunch in the cafeteria. Nov. 14 - Diabetes Support Group, 4 - 5 p.m., Just in time for Thanksgiving, special guests Squanto and William Bradford (Great Americans re-enactors) will tell their stories about overcoming adversity with thankfulness, courage and faith. Mike Fine, MMBH chef, will give tips and recipes for the holidays. The meeting will be held at the Carthage Public Library meeting room.
