The victim in Wednesday’s fatal fire was identified on Saturday by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office as Janelle L. Williams, 32, rural Carthage.
Jasper County Sheriff’s Capt. Derek Walrod said the preliminary cause of death was asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation and no indication of foul play has been found as of Saturday.
“We didn’t find anything suspicious in the investigation or the autopsy,” Walrod said. “She was the only one home when the fire started. We’re still investigating until we get the final autopsy report.”
Carthage Fire Chief Chris Thompson said the cause of the fire was undetermined and may never be known because of the extensive fire damage to the mobile home, located at 12680 County Road 160 northwest of Carthage.
Carthage firefighters responded to the fire at 12680 County Road 160 at 4:33 p.m. Wednesday.
People who called in the fire reported that someone may have been trapped in the home.
Thompson said firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:40 p.m. and found the single-wide mobile home heavily involved with fire.
