  • The Carthage Square will get a much-needed resurfacing, but that will mean traffic and parking headaches for residents and visitors for about a week.
Carthage Public Works Director Zeb Carney said the time frame depends on weather and other factors, but Carney said the project should be finished by Oct. 11.
Blevins Asphalt bid $115,605 and won the contract to mill off about three inches of asphalt, then resurface the Square, which has not seen a resurfacing project this extensive in 17 years, Carney said.
He said the contractor will start on the north and west sides of the Square, closing both those sides on Wednesday.
Carney said they plan to move to the south and east sides and finish milling the asphalt by Thursday.
The contractor will then begin laying new asphalt on Monday and hopes to resurface the entire Square by Tuesday.
Carney said city street workers will move in and repaint the stripes on Wednesday, finishing sometime Thursday.
“We plan to have the whole thing done a week before Maple Leaf, depending on the weather of course,” Carney said.
The project had originally been planned for last month, and the delay will mean new inlaid concrete crossings will have to be installed in the spring.
Plans are for city street department workers to lay those down with a decorative concrete, part of the Vision Carthage plans to spruce up the historic Square.
Even with the approximately $20,000 cost of the sidewalks, Carney said the project should come in significantly below the $180,000 the city budgeted for the project.
In other street news, the city’s annual repaving project continues today through Friday.
Every year the city lays new asphalt on five or six stretches of city street.
This year, crews are working in five places.
    • Shannon Drive from Piper to Wilson roads.
    • Ashley Drive off Shannon Drive.
    • Beau Drive off Alexandra Drive.
    • Gardendale from Highland Avenue to College Street.
    • Buena Vista Drive from Fairview Avenue to 13th Street.
Anyone with questions about any of these projects is asked to call the Carthage Street Department at 237-7020.
