Vernon D. “Mac” McCoy, 87, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 in Carthage, Mo.
Vernon was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Ravenden Springs, Ark., to James Robert McCoy and Edith Dubois McCoy Brown. They preceded him in death. Vernon was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Navy as a medical corpsman aboard the USS Solace Hospital Ship, AH5, in the Pacific Fleet. He saw the U.S. Flag raised in Iwo Jima. He married LaVerne Hutchison on August 30, 1947 in St. Louis, MO. They moved to Carthage, Mo., in 1951, where Mac was employed by McCune-Brooks Hospital as a medical technician in lab and x-ray. He retired in 1988 with 37 years of service. He was a past president of the American Medical Technicians (AMT), member of the ARCRT, VFW of Carthage, Masonic Lodge #197 and recently received his 50 year pin for membership in the Grand Lodge of Missouri A.F. & A.M.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 65 years, LaVerne, of Carthage; daughter, Donna McCoy Shay and husband, Doug, of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, Doyle McCoy (Aubrey) and Dallas McCoy, of St. Louis, Mo.., Dave McCoy (Betty) of Carthage, Mo.; sisters, Joyce Schoenfeld, of Effingham, Ill, Jean Wooten (Cliff), of Scio, Ore., Opal Nadine Bridgeman (Leighton), of Creston, Calif.; one grandson, four great granddaughters, three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 6–8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Masonic rites will be given at 6 p.m. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Minister David Cook will officiate. Interment will be in Park Cemetery will full military honors. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Masonic Lodge 197 Building Fund in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO, 64836.
