  • Posting the best team score in program history, the Carthage girls golf team finished second Wednesday in the Jim Pearson Memorial golf tournament at Horton Smith Golf Course in Springfield.
Carthage shot a 345 on the day, while Kickapoo won the tournament with a team score of 334. Joplin finished third at 360, Lebanon and Republic tied at 365, Greenwood finished at 408, Glendale shot a 416 and Nixa finished with a score of 419.
Courtney Catron and Emily Pence each shot 85 to tie for ninth place in the field of 48. Kelsey frost shot an 87, Lindsay Borland shot an 88, and Abbey Catron finished with a 97.
"Our best scores were tied for ninth overall but our team was very consistent," head coach Lowell Catron said. "That's a great thing. Emily had her best round ever. Lindsay Borland had her best round ever. Kelsey Frost had her best round ever. When you're having your best scores in golf and they're during a tournament, that's pretty remarkable and I think so far just about everybody on the team has had a career-best round."
Catron said he was especially proud of Pence, who played in a sudden death playoff Tuesday night to earn the spot on the varsity team for Wednesday's tournament.
"And she ended up tying for our low score, so we're very happy with that," he said.
Catron said the team plays well under pressure, but it's pressure the players are putting on themselves.
"It's their competitiveness," he said. "They want to be the low score on the team and they're all wanting to do that. That competitiveness is great for golf as a team sport because it's just a bunch of individuals and then you add them up at the end. You want them all to know they can be the low person for the team."
Carthage's team score of 345 was the best score posted by the Tigers by 18 strokes. Carthage plays on Friday at the Carl Junction Invitational at Briarbrook.
