  • Work began on Tuesday to replace the conventional crossing at the intersection of Missouri Highways 43 and 96 west of Oronogo with a roundabout.
The intersection has been the scene of numerous accidents and three fatalities over the past few years despite numerous safety enhancements added to the intersection.
On Tuesday, the intersection was closed and will remain closed for 35 days until late October as AMAC-Missouri builds a one-lane roundabout at a cost to Missouri taxpayers of $860,000.
A detour has been signed that uses Missouri Highway 171, County Route M, County Route O, Missouri Highway 96 and County Route D to get around the construction.
Dan Salisbury, assistant district engineer for the Southwest District of MoDOT said officials hope the addition of a roundabout will change the look of the intersection and cause drivers to be more cautious as they drive.
The department made numerous changes to the intersection since it was changed from a four-way stop to a two-way stop in the 1980s.
    • Warning flashers were installed over the intersection when that change was made.
    • In 2004, rumble strips were installed on Missouri 96 on either side of the intersection to warn eastbound and westbound traffic of stop signs.
    • In 2009, interactive warning flashers were installed to warn traffic on Missouri 96 of traffic coming from the north and south. The flashers only come on when traffic is approaching the intersection on Missouri 43.
    • Also in 2009, MoDOT installed larger signs and more reflectors at the poles holding those signs.
    • In 2010, MoDOT reduced the speed limit from just north of the intersection to Stone’s Corner from 65 miles per hour to 55.
Still the accidents have been happening at the intersection with alarming frequency.
Most accidents involve a vehicle on Missouri 96 crossing in front of a vehicle on Missouri 43 and being hit broadside.
The only fatalities at the intersection happened in two crashes, one in October 2009 and the other in January 2010. Three people were killed in those two accidents.
