  • Shirley Louise (Cooley) Alexander Banta, of Lockwood, Mo., departed this life on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012 in the Good Shepherd Nursing Home at the age of 72 years. She was born on Sept. 19, 1939 in Carthage, Mo., to Lloyd Cooley Sr. and Ethel (Ellswarth) Cooley. Shirley was raised by Ethel and Lee "Pistol" Bass after her father passed away at a young age. She graduated from Carthage Senior High in 1957. Shirley was united in marriage to Gary Wayne Alexander on Oct. 11, 1957. They were members of the Center Point Christian Church. Their surviving children are Brian Alexander and his wife Lisa of Carthage, Mo., and Vickie Klein of Waveland, Miss.; along with four grandchildren, Randi of Carthage, Mo., Lane of Carthage, Mo., Samantha of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Jimmy of Louisville, Miss.; three great granddaughters; and one great grandson. Shortly after their 30th anniversary, Gary suddenly passed away on Nov. 23, 1987. Some years later she got a second chance at happiness and married her long time family friend, Kenneth Banta, and was married on Aug. 22, 1993. Shirley extended her family with three step-sons, Russ and his wife Shannon of Wichita, Kan., Randy and his wife Stacey of Pleasanton, Kan., and Gary and his wife Tammy of Greenfield, Mo.; five step granddaughters; two step grandsons; and five step great grandsons. Also surviving is one brother, Lloyd Cooley Jr. and his wife Sharon of Carthage, MO; one step brother, Wayne Bass and his wife Barbara of Carthage, Mo., and two brothers-in-law, Reid Alexander and his wife Saundra of Iantha, Mo., and Edward Banta and his wife Dorma of Golden City, Mo. Preceding her in death were her parents, Ethel (Ellswarth) Cooley Bass, Lloyd Cooley Sr., and Lee "Pistol" Bass; her first husband, Gary Alexander; and one step grandson, Brandon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012 in the First Christian Church of Golden City with Minister Dave Powell and Minister Bob Teegarden officiating. Burial will follow in the Arthur Cemetery in Avilla, MO. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur Cemetery or to the Good Shepherd Nursing Home. Services are under the care of Lockwood Funeral Chapel.
