Fern L. Hickey, 89, Carthage, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage.
Fern Louise Gillum was born Aug. 20, 1922 in rural Jasper County, the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Gillum and Daisy Zuck Gillum. She attended Jasper Public Schools and married Benjamin Murry Hickey, Jr. on July 28, 1940; he preceded her in death on October 22, 2009. She and her husband moved to Salinas, California in 1948, returning to Carthage in 1962. While in Salinas, she worked for the Monterey County Extension Office and after returning to Carthage was a bookkeeper for Carthage Auto Parts; was an owner/operator of her own Ceramic Shop in Carthage and was a member of T.O.P. S.
Survivors include a son, James L. Hickey, wife, Margie, Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Saundra L. Ukena, husband, Stephen, Carthage and Pamela Imbeau, husband, Jim, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; one sister, Irene Hamm, Carthage; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Benjamin, four sisters and three brothers.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Minister Bryan Morrow will officiate.
