  • Melvin L. “Bub” Hays, 81, Carthage, passed away Friday, July 6, 2012 at his home.  
    Melvin L. Hays was born Aug. 31, 1930 in Carterville, Mo., the son of Cecil L. Hays and Fern Opal Ruston Hays. He was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1948, served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952 during the Korean Conflict and worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Carthage for 27 years.  
    He married Patricia Darlene Ennis on July 1, 1950 in Carthage; she survives.
    Bud had many accomplishments during his life including cabinet and home building, which can be seen both in Carthage, Mo., and Grove, Okla.; where he and his wife, Pat, lived after Bud retired from the U.S. Postal Service.  
    They enjoyed sailing and were members of the Grand Lake Sailing Club, where Bud was past commodore.  After moving back to Carthage in early 2000, Bud planted an orchard of apple, pear, peach and cherry trees; raised goats, chickens, cows and also grew tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in a garden.
    Additional survivors include a son; Mike (Diann) Hays, Carthage and a daughter; Clancy Grissom, Joplin; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Don Vance Hays, a sister, Kathleen Evelyn Christy and a granddaughter, Pamela Sue.
    Private family services will be held at a later date with Larry Hartman officiating the service in Pleasant Hill, Mo. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.
