  • Red, White and Boom will mean more than just fireworks at Carthage’s Municipal Park on Wednesday, as Carthage residents celebrate Independence Day.
The Carthage Convention and Visitors Bureau and a committee of Carthaginians has brought in vendors with snow cones, ice cream and cotton candy, and even laser tag for people who come to the park early.
The food vendors will be set up in the parking lot behind the skating while visitors will get the chance to play laser tag in another part of the park.
Wendi Douglas, director of the Carthage Convention and Visitors Bureau, said its an effort to bring more events to an already popular fireworks display.
“We just hadn’t had good coordination of events and vendors that day for a few years,” Douglas said. “So the city formed a committee and we planed some events.”
Douglas said the Kiwanis Club will open Kiddieland from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. on Wednesday. All rides, including the refurbished train and the new merry-go-round are 50 cents per ride.
Tropical Sno snow cones, Jack’s Ice Cream and a cotton candy vendor will be set up in the parking area immediately west of the roller rink near the entrance to the swimming pool. Vendors will start selling at 4 p.m.
Bill’s Laser Tag and Paintball, from Springfield, will have a laser tag arena set up somewhere to the south of the parking lot.
At sundown, the Carthage Police Department Explorer Unit will present the colors in a flag ceremony and the fireworks will start around 5:30 p.m.
Radio Station 95.1 Mike FM will play patriotic music throughout the display.
Parking is usually an issue and the city asks that people avoid littering the golf course where many people set up blankets and umbrellas to watch the display.
The parking lot in the park usually fills up early, but the display is visible from many other places.
Red, White and Boom was the name given to the big fireworks display at Carthage’s Municipal Golf Course in 2000 when the event included vendors and live music.
The event had slowly been pared back over the years to the point where it included one vendor and the fireworks last year.
