  • Construction crews will begin resurfacing work that will affect both the alternate routes east from Carthage around the Missouri Highway 96 bridge replacement project, but a spokeswoman said the two projects will proceed separately so they cause as little interference to traffic as possible.
The Missouri Department of Transportation announced last week that it planes to resurface County Route E between Missouri Highway 37 south of Avilla and Garrison Street in Carthage.
It also plans to resurface County Route V between Missouri 96 and U.S. Highway 71 north of Carthage.
County Route E is part of the official detour around the Missouri 96 bridge over the Spring River near Kellogg Lake Park while County Route V is the unofficial detour that can be used by cars and light trucks, but not large tractor trailers.
The three bridges on North Garrison Street are limited to traffic weighing nine tons or less.
Angela Eden, spokeswoman for the MoDOT office in Springfield, said work on those two projects is planned to start sometime next week after crews finish resurfacing Missouri Highway 86 in Neosho.
Eden said the department understands the importance of the County Route E and County Route V in light of the work on the Spring River bridge, so the two projects will proceed separately.
Work on all three roads is expected to be finished sometime in early July.
The department said drivers can expect one-lane traffic in the areas where crews are working. A pilot car and flaggers will be used to guide drivers through the work zone.
The two county routes in Jasper County will receive new hot-mix asphalt driving surfaces.
Blevins Construction is the contractor on all three projects, that total $1.3 million.
    Progress reports
Eden said workers are moving along in near-perfect construction weather on both the Missouri 96 bridge on the east side of Carthage and the Missouri 171 bridge west of Carthage.
Hartman Construction, Springfield, is the contractor on the $1.4 million project.
Eden said most of the deck has been removed and workers will start removing the columns and the structures on either end of the bridge in the next few weeks.
She said workers will build a temporary stream crossing to allow access to the bridge columns in the next few days.
“This is a complete replacement,” Eden said. “They will take down and replace the columns and the end portions of the bridge and replace all of it.”
The official detour for all traffic, including large trucks is on Missouri 571 (Garrison Avenue) to County Route E (Fairview Avenue) then Missouri 37 north to Missouri 96 in Avilla.
The project is expected to be finished in December, although MoDOT said the bridge will be open to traffic sometime in October.
Page 2 of 2 - To the west, crews with Pace Construction, West Plains, have torn out the columns and the ends of the bridge on northbound Missouri 171 over the railroad tracks and are grading to install replacement end structures.
This project was bid at $2.2 million.
Traffic in this case has been reduced to one lane either direction on Highway 171 near the construction zone.
This project is scheduled for completion on Dec. 1.
