  • Visiting Carl Junction scored three runs in both the third and seventh innings Tuesday and rolled to a 6-1 victory against the Carthage Merchants in AAA American Legion baseball action at Carl Lewton Stadium.
Carthage took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Keaton Giett led off with an infield single, Jonathan Terry singled and Ethan Wiggin tripled to left field, but it was all the Merchants could muster in seven innings.
Carthage starter Zack Overton cruised through the first two innings, coaxing Carl Junction into three groundouts, three fly outs and just one single, but Post 781 struck for three runs in the top of the third with the help of a double, a walk, a single, a wild throw to first on a pick-off attempt and an infield single.
Carl Junction threatened again in the fourth when the leadoff runner reached on an error, but Carthage Terry, the Carthage right fielder, gunned the runner down at home following a two-out single.
Post 781 loaded the bases in the fifth, but Terry came up big again, throwing out another runner at the plate, and Overton worked out of the jam with a groundout to end the inning. Carl Junction plated three more runs in the top of the seventh when Josh Petty and Chase Marrs each singled, then Nathan Skaggs drove in two with a single of his own. Jaren Hulette scored another run on a sacrifice bunt.
Carthage, after putting four runners on base in the first inning, failed to get more than one runner on in any other inning until the seventh. The Merchants put one runner on in the second on an error, added a single by Wiggin in the third, put Koltin Greene on with a walk in the fourth and put Kyle Lee on with an error in the sixth. Giett and Terry each singled in the bottom of the seventh.
Carthage remains at home this evening when the Merchants host Joplin for two seven-inning games, beginning at 6 p.m. at Carl Lewton Stadium. Carthage plays at Mt. Vernon on Monday.
