This is the only time you could be locked up for having a big heart.
The Flex For a Cure Lock Up has been set for Wednesday, April 25 at the Broadview Country Club. At this lock up, members of the community have the opportunity to “turn in” others for having a big heart, and they inherit a “bail” they try to raise for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA.)
The Carthage community has rallied in a variety of ways for local MDA ambassador Shelby Shores, a fourth grader at Mark Twain Elementary School, in her efforts to fundraise for the MDA.
The Lock Up is another way the community can spread MDA awareness, send children to summer camp as well as help with patients' doctors' appointments and travel expenses to frequent check ups.
Next on Shelby's agenda: Walmart Bowl, Saturday, April 21; the Carthage Lock Up at the Carthage Country Club on Wednesday, April 25; Radio-A-Thon on May 3-4; and the Cycle Connection MDA Black and Blue Ball on May 5.
“Shelby is doing great,” said Claire Shoes, Shelby's mother. “She is anxious for summer to arrive. She is excited to see her friends at MDA camp and the upcoming Muscle Walk. Shelby really enjoys these events and time spent.
'Our MDA friends have became our MDA family,” Claire continued. “We are wrapping up the shamrock fundraiser. To date, 16 counties in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma have raised $35000. Every one of those dollars are greatly appreciated by the families like ours who receive services from MDA.
“I am very proud of my daughter,” Claire said. “She is raising awareness about this disease, and how it affects so many.”
