Ready to get muddy again?

The 2012 Mudstock event has been set for June 2 behind the SMB Bank (the former airport in Myers Park). Last year, this annual event was canceled due to the May 22 Joplin tornado. The 294th National Guard, and their equipment, was unavailable after the disaster, but is gearing up this year for some good, figuratively-clean, family fun.

“The family component in this event is phenomenal,” said Robin Standridge, Alliance of Southwest Missouri's community director. “It's a beautiful thing to see dads down in the mud with their kids – just having a blast.”

The motto that triggered the annual Mudstock event is “Getting muddy on the outside, staying clean on the inside,” which Standridge said means enjoying a healthy, drug-free life.

“It is fun and we want kids to see that you can have fun without drugs or alcohol,” she said.

This year, anyone wishing to participate in a mud volleyball tournament should contact Jonathan Roberts at the Carthage YMCA. Standridge said she was looking forward to seeing the members of the Carthage In Action (CIA) play some competitive games with anyone brave enough to get in the mud.

“It's all in good fun,” Standridge said with a laugh.

The Mudstock event this year will be held with the help of the Carthage fire and police departments, Mercy McCune-Brooks ambulance crew, Carthage Caring Communities Coalition, Blue Bunny and the YMCA.
