The American Legion Post #9 and VFW Post #2590 are hosting a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 31 at Park Cemetery.

The program will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with assorted music by the Heartland Band. The ceremony itself will begin at 10 a.m. with an introduction by American Legion Post #9 Commander Jerry Chapman. Members of local military veteran’s organizations will post the colors, and VFW Post #2590 Chaplain Sonny Elder will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary and Junior Auxiliary will read names of local military veterans who have passed since last Memorial Day. Although the list was compiled by Frank Stein of Park Cemetery and local funeral directors, it may not be extensive. The VFW and American Legion apologize for any missed names.

The group will recognize the memory of USMC Col. Mike Riley before introducing this year’s guest speaker, USMC Col. Milton Wick, retired.

Members of the local Veteran’s Alliance will fold the flag and Petty Officer Andy Smith will then present it to Wick, who will place it on the Veteran’s Memorial. The flag is in memory of Capt. James W. Hendrickson.

Elder will place the wreath on the Veteran’s Memorial, and Chapman will present a musical number in tribute to the fallen soldiers that are flown to their final resting place by the aircrew of the Texas National Guard, titled “Angel Flight.”

This program is sponsored by the Carthage Veteran’s Alliance and the staff of Park Cemetery.
