Bettie Lu Herndon, 75, Carthage, Mo., passed away Friday, March 26, 2010, at her home after a sudden illness.

Bettie Lu Raines was born Jan. 1, 1935, in Hurley, Mo., the daughter of Claude Raines and Debbie (McGuire) Raines. She attended Verona public school and was a graduate of Verona High School. She married Donald L. Herndon on Aug. 7, 1970, in Aurora, Mo. He survives. She and her husband came to Carthage in 1971 from Aurora, where she worked for Juvenile Shoes and H.E. Williams, Inc. She retired from H.E. Williams Sept. 1, 1984. Bettie was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Shrine Ladies, Carthage Chapter. She was very active with the Shrine Train Crew, Carthage.

Survivors include one son, Harold Gene “Weener” (Belinda) Herndon, Billings, Mo.; three daughters, Susan (Richard) Shipman, Carthage, Leslie (John) Moore, Aurora, Mo., Janet (Tim) Swope, Branson, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and two very special friends, Shawn Summers and Debbie Kosilla, Carthage. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Visitation will be held from 6–6:50 p.m., Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m.  Graveside services will be held at a later date.
