A Joplin police officer was arrested and is being held at the Jasper County Jail in Carthage after the police department received a complaint that the 23-year-old officer was involved in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl and investigators found inappropriate pictures of the girl on his cellular phone.

Joplin Police Officer Jonathan White, an officer with the police department since January 2009, is currently in custody in the jail in Carthage after internal affairs officers found inappropriate pictures of the girl on the officer’s cellular phone.

Joplin police said they were seeking charges of possession of child pornography and the officer was placed on administrative leave.

A written release from the Joplin Police Department said the department received a complaint regarding the relationship between the female and the officer.

The department’s internal affairs division started investigating on Saturday. The release said the investigation led police to White’s home in Webb City.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force were called in to assist. Investigators recovered digital images of a 17-year-old female acquaintance from White’s cell phone.
